Rheem RTG-64DVN Direct Vent Indoor Series Natural Gas 6.4 GPM Tankless Water Heater Reviews
bought it directly from the rheem factory and had it installed the next day, it ran for about 20 hours before the circuit board went out..the water heater it replaced lasted twenty three years and now this new indoor Rheem couldnt even make it one day...SAD..im just glad its under warranty..so far they fixed me up without a problem and its still running great but now im wondering how long it will run after this fix..pros..constant hot water when taking shower, low gas bill, tax rebate, smallcons...cost a fortune to install whether ur a diy or have it done professionally, makes clicking noises when shutting off and turning on, complicated to the extreme..lot of parts inside that may break..i.e. circuit board, fan, igniter, remote panel, heat exchanger, sensors out the wazzooADDED... JUNE 13 2011 This is awsome i love it!! lowest water bill ive ever had 17 bucks! yea i know the circuit board went out but it hasnt gave me a problem since and i love how the hot water never runs out. TOTALLY SATISFIED
I bought this same unit badged as Rudd online for about 1/3 less @$449, shipping included. Paloma of Japan owns Rheem and Rudd, and all 3 brands are essentially the same. The unit seems to be good quality and had lots of features. Since there is a tax credit of $500, at the price I paid it seemed to be a no brainer to have the IRS pay for my water heater. However, beware of several factors:1. These units require specific venting, and that cost me another $250.2. You may need to upgrade your gas line to 3/4", since most take units would not have a 3/4 supply in place. Unless you want to take the risk with dealing with gas lines, that means a plumber and related costs, which can add up. In may case, $300.3. These units are complex: Think of it as a computer that also heats water. Full of sensors, electric valves, etc. It should also be flushed every year. Although I hope for long service life, there are just many more moving parts and electronics than a conventional tank water heater, and when it malfunctons, it is not like just any plumber can help.4. Although it is not absolutely required, it is less work and fewer fittings and thus possible things to leak to add a the valve kit @ $70.5.In my case, my water heater is in basement and I am in a northern climate. As a result the "inefficiency" of the tank water heater helped to keep my basement warm and pipes from freezing. To compensate, I now need to install electric heater. $50. Some of my efficiency gains may thus be offset with increased heating cost during some times of year. These issues are not unique to Rheem/Rudd. Paloma/Rheem/Rudd seems to be best value and widely sold so that service options are better than others. So in spite of the issues, I am reasonably happy and look forward to lowering overall gas cost. However, without the tax rebate, even at $449 I would not go down this path and keep it simple with a tank unit.
