Mechanically very flimsy, but moves a lot of air on high speed and only 25 bucks at Walmart. Amazon is a bit of a rip-off on this one at the current price of $38. Only time will tell whether it holds up, as it is not very sturdy. The noise level is consistent with the air velocity that it achieves. Not disturbing, kind of a pleasant white-noise background. On low speed it's fairly quiet. 5 stars for noise level and air movement, but take away 1 for flimsy construction = 4 stars.
This fan has many great qualities. It not only oscillates but tilts back to face straight up. The wind generated even on low is quite powerful. Having said all that this thing is loud. Loud enough that it annoys people who are trying to watch TV even on the lowest setting. At first b/c of noise I wanted to return it but it comes in handy and I decided to tolerate the noise generated. Probably best for use in a shop or outdoor setting. If you are looking for an indoor fan buy something else.
This fan is perfect. I've been trying to work on my Mom's condo, clearing things out (she passed away last month), and I'm trying not to use the A/C ($$$) unless I absolutely have to. It's quieter than I thought it would be (with a name like Cyclone), and really puts out the air. I'm very pleased with my purchase so far, and hope it continues to work as well.
Pros: Great air flow. Easy to build (3 mins)Cons: The fan does tend to lower by itself unless you tighten it well. And the front cover does not seem to be the most secured thing in the world. Don't buy if you have a animal or child that might pull it off and get chopped up.
The bulk of this fan is made out of light plastic. It might feel cheap, but it's more than sufficient for it to perform its duties. It has a wide, solid base and light for easy moving and relocating from room to room. It moves air very well and the oscillating feature is a definite plus. It was easy to assemble and doesn't require any tools to put together. The noise from the wind it produces is tolerable and is expected when it comes to high velocity fans like this. Definitely a good buy and will recommend it to others looking for a high velocity oscillating fan like this.
For the past 15 yrs or so I have been sleeping with a fan on. 365 days a year. So I would consider myself a "fan expert". The low setting of this fan cranks out a great deal of air. The high setting puts out an almost ridiculous amount. Low setting is the perfect amount of noise for sleep (for me at least). People say it's flimsy but I don't find that the case. The base is wide and you would have to put a lot of effort in to tipping it over. I have not had any problems with the adjustable height. It stays in place if you tighten it. The top of the fan comes completely apart so it's easy to clean. It would get a full 5 stars if the front grill wasn't so difficult to put on. The plastic "slide prong A into slot B" is a little frustrating seeing as how you have to get them all in at the same time. Other than that it's a great fan. Another problem I have with it is that I don't have 2! I'll be buying another soon. So I don't have to lug it back and forth from bedroom to living room.
I have been loyal to the Lasko brand for years. Dollar for dollar, they've always seemed to move more air than the other brands. They're usually a little on the noisy side as well, which is a plus for me, becuase I use my fans as much to drown out other sounds as I do to cool my place. That being said, the Lasko Cyclone is NOISY. Deafening, even. Like a jet taking off. Plus, underneath the roar, there's a rhythmic humming, vibrating noise that travels from the motor through the pededstal into the floor, setting my teeth on edge and annoying my downstairs neighbors. There's no way I could sleep or concentrate on anything with this fan running. I bought two of these fans and they both do the same thing, so I am thinking this must be a common occurence.Other than that, this fan is acceptable. Air movement is excellent, craftmanshop only fair. The front grill seems slightly larger than the back grill, and is extremely difficult to seat properly onto the back grill's tabs. Again, this was a problem in both of the fans I bought.Overall, I'd say to give the Lasko Cyclone a pass.
It is loud, no doubt about it. The thing is I use the fan to help me sleep. It keeps me cool and provides white noise to block out the sounds of cats, house settling, etc. I think it's pretty great. If you're looking for a quiet fan, this isn't the one for you. It's also easy to put together - the instructions weren't even needed.
I bought this fan to replace a similar fan that we used in our bedroom that broke. The old fan had 3 blades and on low speed was barely audible which made it perfect for sleeping. This fan on low speed is so noisy that I must use ear plugs if I want to use it while sleeping. It does move more air than the old one but if you are looking for a quiet fan this is not the one. Assembly was fast and no tools are needed but the all plastic grill cover is somewhat difficult to align. This would work well is a shop or other place where noise is not an issue. If you were trying to use this in a room where you wanted to have a conversation or watch TV it would probably be too noisy.
I just got this today and had my grandson assemble it for me as I am not good at putting things together. Our weather is horrendous here...enough to make anything or anyone wilt. Does what it is supposed to do. I don't see a light on it, but who cares? As long as it keeps me cool that is all I ask of it. My cat actually came out of the bathroom where she has been sleeping on the linoleum..first time in two days that she has come out of there and enjoying the pleasures of being with me in my living room. The price was good too. I couldn't afford AC and because of AC, a lot of our power grids were overloaded, causing customers in our area to lose power. With the fan, this isn't going to happen. I hope others will consider getting a fan and not be sucked into that attitude that AC is the only answer.
